Introduction
Marijuana moon rocks, commonly known as the caviar of cannabis, might be the most expensive bit of nug you'll find on the dispensaries' menu.
Moon Rocks became a thing when West Coast rapper, Kurupt, brought it to people's attention and eventually trademarked his Moon Rock's brand, which carries a 51.2% THC rating.
As for the name, they do look like moon rocks, and If you've got a decent supply of flower, kief, and hash oil, you can make moon rocks yourself. But you can't treat them exactly like regular weed when it's time to smoke. So first let's go over everything you need to know about making and smoking moon rocks.
What is a Moon Rock?
The name is a fitting representation. A Moon Rock is a nugget of cannabis flower that has been coated in hash oil or other cannabis concentrates then rolled in kief.
Moon rocks are not exactly a type of marijuana strain but more of a cannabis experiment, and they're an absolute unit of THC concentration.
The result is a nugget or 'Moon rock' of dense goodness that smells and tastes fantastic. The combination of flower concentrates with kief delivers a massive surge of cannabinoids and terpenes, and has made some users describe their experience as "lunar".
How do you Smoke a Moon Rock?
The process isn’t necessarily complicated by any means, but Moon Rocks are coated in a concentrate that can be a little tricky. So, it does require a bit of extra care and attention when it comes down to prepping and smoking. Here's what we recommend and what we don't. We will start with the don’ts:
Don'ts:
- Don't try to roll your moon rock into a joint/blunt. You'll find it too sticky to be rollable.
- Don't throw moon rocks in your grinder. Not only will you lose most of the moon rock's kief, but you'll also completely gunk up your grinder.
- Don't pack your bowl too tightly. You'll waste more kief, and the bowl may be difficult to light.
Do’s:
- Use scissors to break the nug into small pieces.
- Use glass - Pipe, Bong, etc. (remember, a lot goes a long way!)
- You can also use a hemp wick to light your moon rocks. Using the hemp wick will save you from tasting all of the butane from a lighter.
How Strong are Moon Rocks?
Most moon rocks contain more than 50% THC. Kurupt, the American rapper has "Kurupt's Moon Rock," which carries a 51.2% THC rating. Due to this high potency, you are cautious to offer greens of a Moon Rock bowl to a first-time smoker. At least let them know they might end up floating somewhere deep in orbit.
In small doses, however, Moon Rocks can be effective for pain reduction, and with a .15% CBD rating, it is also a good idea for treating anxiety, pain, and other medical conditions.
How long do they take to kick in?
Based on people's reviews, you can see some immediate effects that kick into high gear within about 30 minutes and you can expect your high to settle in for several hours. What You'll Need to Make Moon Rocks. What You'll Need to Make Moon Rocks...

While GSC is the traditional moon rocks strain, you can make them with any one of your favorite cannabis varieties.
- A nug of cannabis flower
- Extract
- Kief
- Tongs or tweezers (to separate sticky ingredients)
- A liquid dropper (optional)
Once you have all the tools and ingredients, this Step-by-Step process will show you how to make Moon Rocks:
1. Take the Cannabis flower and apply your extract to cover the whole nug.
- You can roll your bud in the cannabis oil; depending on the consistency. (Some extracts may require that you apply heat to achieve a more liquid consistency that will better adhere to your flower).
- If your extract is liquid enough, you may be able to use a dropper to help place it on your nug.
2. Add two to three more layers of extracts. This step isn't strictly necessary, but moon rocks are usually coated with more than one layer of concentrate.
- Allow each layer pass through the cannabis nug before each application.
3. Roll the extract-covered flower in your kief. Use tweezers if necessary.
4. Take your Moon Rock and set it aside to dry in a cool place, away from direct light or sunlight.
